What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.

Sounds simple right? It's a little bit more than that. While most people can learn the basics which can help a lot with your business and website design, there are a lot of complexities to Search Engine Optimization.

SEO is a marketing technique that has a primary focus on improving organic traffic. Search engine optimization combines the coding and back end processes of a website with the front end design and accessibility. It also looks at the content of the site itself... how much is there and how good is it? All of these things combined will make a difference in how your SEO optimized site shows up in Google's ranks. This will improve traffic, rankings, and increase awareness of your business through search engines.

But SEO just doesn't start there? How do you measure your website's search engine optimization and how do you compare to other businesses local SEO? Ok.... I get what it does.  But why do search engines need SEO?

Now that we've established that we need to set up the map for the search engines... How exactly does that work?

Just because your website looks great aesthetically, doesn't mean that when it is indexed by a search engine, it will look the same to it.  They are limited in how they crawl your website and read your content.  There are specific procedures to ensure that your site is SEO friendly.

Use HTML to identify your text.  Make sure your toss your titles in a H1 tag and use H2 for any sub-titles like the above "Search Engine Optimized Design."

Fill alt text for all your images on your website.  Not only does this help visitors navigate your site who cannot visually see your website, it helps search engines know information about a picture.  Alt text is a text description of images and video on a web page.


Keywords are the fuel to a search engine's fire.

They are an integral part of how people find what they are looking for.  Search engines index and crawl websites and remember keywords on that site so that it can look back to that site later when looking for those specific keywords.  If you want to ensure that your website management business is showing up in search, make sure you talk about website management on your site.

Don't take this as putting your keywords over and over on a site means that you will be the top search result.  Search engines have a system in place that prevents against this kind of abuse.  If you're not using your keywords naturally and properly, there's a high chance that the search engine will find out.  In some cases, your site can even get banned from search all together.


On-Page Optimization

The best way to ensure that your site has quality search engine optimization is to make sure your keyword is everywhere.  Your keyword should always be in the title, the content, the alt text, and the metadata.  Make sure your keyword is optimized correctly and efficiently for who you're trying to reach.  There are other formulas for how to optimize each page for search which we can go over later.


Save the best for last!  After all this, how do you know if what you're doing is working?  With tracking, you can check your search engine optimization and see where your traffic is coming from.  Tracking is what brings it all together, with a full search engine optimization plan, your site will be bringing more and more visitors daily to increase business all around.  If we do not know where they are coming from and what they are doing on the site, then we cannot accurately increase business.  The first thing you should do is sign up on Google Analytics and Google Search Console.  Get yourself acquainted with how to use these tools.

You want to know where your traffic is coming from.  Check where you rank by keyword to see which keywords are performing the best.  One popular option is to use SerpFox to monitor keyword ranks.

The next metric is  backlinks.  A backlink is essentially what it sounds like, an incoming link from one website to yours.  If you have more backlinks, a search engine assumes that your content has high quality for those keywords.

With a full search engine optimization plan, your site will be bringing more and more visitors daily to increase business all around.
